If frequently asked question is what is the will of God? In pursuit of that question people will read books, ask people who they think are wise or spiritual, how to discern what God's will is. Today we're going to take a look at the Bible, God's Word, and see what God says His will is.
And after having discerned what God's will is for us, there's a follow-up question that I will ask. If you've been around our congregation for a while, you may have heard a similar message that I'm going to give today and the title of the message is, what is God's will for my life? What is God's will for me? And there seems to be a lot of questions on that. And there are books written on how to discern God's will. There are people who are willing to tell you what God's will is, somehow it's moving and I'm not touching it. Okay, why?
Okay, why? I don't need to go yet. Okay, so I'll back it up. I'm just doing my introduction. And so the funny thing is, is that God tells us what His will is. So you don't need to buy books, you don't need to go find wise people or spiritual people to find out what God's will is.
And so let's ask Him what His will is. And so if you'll turn in your Bibles, and I hope you have your Bibles, turn to 1 Thessalonians chapter 4, verses 3-8. It's not a lot of mystery, because He starts out and tells you, for this is the will of God. So God's telling you what His will is. For this is the will of God, and so will God, and so will He. And so if you're a person, and you're a person, you're a person, and so will God.
And so He's going to then define, well, what is that process of being holy? That is that you abstain from sexual immorality. And that each of you know how to possess his own body, is that God is saying, my will is that you treat your body as a holy unto me that you abstain from sexual immorality that you treat it different. And so the Scriptures tell us that our body is the temple of God, that His Spirit dwells in us, but that our body represents the fact that we worship Him. And so I've had the blessings of the privilege to go to a number of places, one of those was Athens. And in Athens, it kind of looks like Los Angeles, it's a massive city.
But up on this giant hill mountain is what we call the Parthenon. And it is a large temple and you've probably seen it on some type of television show where if you've had the privilege to go there, you'll see there. And that temple is dedicated to the goddess Athena. The whole city knows that the city, their goddess, is Athena, and they are dedicated to worshiping her. So it would be inappropriate for you to go to the Parthenon to worship Mars or Neptune, because that's not a temple for them. It's a temple dedicated to Athena. And goddess, saying, you are my temple.
You have been set aside for me. My spirit dwells in you. So I don't want you to participate like the Gentiles do like everybody else. It says, well, if it feels good, do it. No, no, you are different.
Your body is my temple. And it is to be sanctified. It is to be holy. And you're to do so not in lustful passions like the Gentiles who do not know God. You are to treat your body differently. There was a philosophy of theology that said, well, the spiritual is a spiritual. And the physical is the physical. And either one does it impact the other.
And it's just that's the true. The physical and the spiritual have an impact on each other. And I want you to live your lives, your body as a temple of mine. And you are to hold that body such. And so it goes on to says, and that no man transgresses and if fraud is brother in the matter, because the Lord is the Avenger.
And all these things just as we also have told you before, installantly warned you. For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification. And then it goes on to say, so he who rejects this is not rejecting man, but the God who gives his holy spirit to you. So God is making it very, very plain. The God says, I am placing my spirit in you. And if you do not treat your body as my temple, you are violating my will. Pretty plain.
On the philosophy of all of our times is if it feels good, do it. And I say, that's not that's not what I've called you to do. And so his will may seem counter to our culture. But this is what his will is, is to present our bodies as that temple and that we act in such a way. And so you'll hear people, you know, the typical guy trying to pressure on the woman will say, well, if you love me, you will do these things.
And her response would be, if you love me, you would wait. You would wait not only because that's what God's will is for us, but perhaps we won't end up marrying. And the person I marry, you've defrauded the sanctity of my body. Because we will someday be one. Now I will say that there is an amazing thing that is somewhat happened. There's actually a commercial selling men's fragrance.
And it asks, what is a gentleman? And the various women will give some answers about, you know, opening the door and paying for dinner and those subs. But one woman says, a gentleman is one who saves himself for marriage. I almost fell out of my chair. Look, this, this is on TV. This is counter to our culture. And yet it's right.
And so what is the will of God? Have your body be sanctified. But that's not the only thing God has called us to do. If you'll turn in your Bibles to the same book, 1st, Estilaneous Chapter 5 verse 16. And it says this, rejoice always. Now I'm going at the end it'll tell us this is God's will.
So the first thing is we're first told we are to hold our bodies in sanctification. Next he says rejoice always. Notice he just doesn't say rejoice. He says rejoice always. Doesn't mean you rejoice when things are happy. Doesn't mean you rejoice when things are going well. It says rejoice always.
So when things are not going well, we're to rejoice. When things are terrible, we're to rejoice. When things are just okay, we're to rejoice because joy comes not from happenings, but God. It doesn't matter the circumstances. God is still sovereign. God still loves you. God is still merciful and long suffering and redemptive and secure.
We can rejoice regardless of the circumstances because we know who our God is. Paul says that I know whom I have believed. He doesn't say I know what I believe. He knows who I believe in. And by rejoicing, we know who we believe in that no matter what happens, whether I cry, he can wipe the tears away, whether I have some terrible disease, he can cure it. And even if he doesn't in this lifetime, guess what?
He gives me eternal life. There is nothing this world or Satan can do that God can't undo or hasn't already. So I can rejoice whether it seems like the score is a million to zero because the scriptures tell me we win. Not even death is victorious. So we can rejoice always.
Then he says, pray without CC. We are told to constantly pray. This may seem to be even more difficult than rejoicing always. You go, well how can I pray while I'm driving? Well the way some of you drive, I think you should pray. But prayer is not a matter of saying oh Lord bless so and so and bless so and so and and and may I win the lottery and you know and and I'll give some of the money to church or I even give 90 percent of the church. You know we think prayer is a matter of asking God for things or telling God what we he should do for us. Prayer is communication.
It is talking to God and guess what? He wants us to. We could say oh well God knows everything and therefore we don't need to but that's not his will. He wants us to communicate and guess what the better you communicate the better you are at communication. And I'll tell you how you know how well you are at communication. Sign up for 24 hour prayer vigil and just take an hour. You say certainly I can pray for an hour. After three minutes you're going what do I say now?
So some of you sing and some whatever because we're not used to talking and yet I know a lot of you will want to talk my ear off. You want to talk talk talk and and people and and and and men love to to complain about women how they're always wanting to talk and whatever and yet that's communication we're supposed to be communicating with God. And the more you communicate with God the better communicate with God. My son and I have a and he and I will speak about a number of different things because he has various interests I have various interests and we have a relationship and we can talk in my grandsons we're starting to to be more communicative because they're getting to that age where they're a little more communicative and I enjoy it but I enjoy just the present sometimes whether they say something or not the fact that they're with me is a blessing. Just being in the presence of God is a blessing and guess what it's communication which means maybe you should stop talking and start listening. God now I've told you what I want.
God what do you want? God what is it that would make you happy in my life? What can I do for you? What what I'm just just or this thing is bothering me why is it bothering me and just let him talk to you and communicate. But it's all of us are kind of like that narcissistic person who says after a while we know after like an hour of talking about themselves they say well that's enough about me talking about me now you talk about me and that's kind of what we want to do with God okay God I told you all these things now God you talk to me about me no maybe God just wants to talk maybe he just wants to be because sometimes it's in the still small voice it's not in the roaring wind so we are to pray constantly pray consistently pray maybe even in our communication here's a those of you are married try this when you're talking to your spouse imagine God's listening he is but I want you to imagine God's listening would you talk to your spouse the same way if God were listening as if he weren't and maybe if you were talking to your spouse a different way maybe you should start talking to God to your spouse a different way because God is in fact listening and maybe all of our communication should be.
As if God was present because God is so we are to rejoice always not sometimes not when it's convenient not when great things are happening but always we're to pray unstoppable we're to pray without ceasing then it says in everything if thanks well wait a minute you mean that terrible thing that happened didn't say give thanks for the good stuff it's just in everything give thanks so when that terrible thing happens where to give thanks because maybe we don't know that terrible thing is not as terrible as we think it is or maybe it's because of the promises that God says I will turn all things to good for those who love me and are called according to my purpose so I can give thanks that even in this terrible thing that just happened God will turn it for good so I can give thanks that God is sovereign and that he will turn it for my benefit even if I can't see it right now so we are to give thanks such as for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus this is God's will that we are to sanctify our bodies that we are to rejoice always that we are to pray without ceasing and that we are to and everything give thanks notice most of us when we want to know what God will is we want to know what God wants us to do should I become this person or that person should this be my career or that be very career this college or no college what all these things and notice the various things that we talk about is not what you do but who you are and God is more concerned about who you are than what you do and so his will is first to transform us into being like the world to be like his children we're also told in Romans we're told in Matthew when the disciples asked Lord teaches to pray and so unfortunately we call this the Lord's prayer when it's actually the disciples prayer the Lord's prayer is found in in John what we would call the great high priestly prayer but this prays in this way so Jesus says this is the way we're to pray our father our daddy this one who is in heaven hallowed be your name your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven our prayer life should be God I want what happens here on earth to be like what happens in heaven in heaven God's will is done the angels do God's will the elders do God's will they serve him and the cherubim do God's will there's no question of that and so Jesus says he wants us to pray that when on earth we do like what's happening in heaven and so if you don't know what to pray he just told us how to pray God I pray that earth reflects heaven that we do hear what they would do in heaven we glorify you we praise you we do these things we worship you because you are who you are we want to magnify your glory and we're not looking for then he goes give us to stay our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we have forgiven our debtors.
He goes on and on about these things and do not leave this in temptation but deliver us from the evil one and then there's a little bracket that we don't know whether that part is actually there or not but it's it's a good saying but he taught us to pray your will be done so we even in his will he teaches us to pray for his will and then in Romans it says this therefore I urge our beseech or a beg you brethren by the mercies of God to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice acceptable to God which is your spiritual service of worship the first thing that we talked about as being God's will is to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice to maintain that sanctification of your body that that is simply a reasonable offer because your body is not yours it has been redeemed it has been purchased with a price and so part of our worship of God is how we present and maintain our bodies and this is and do not be conformed to this world we are to be a peculiar people and sometimes we'll be culer but in the wrong reason where to be different from the world not because we're just weird but because we don't go along with the world we're not be conformed to it but be transformed by the renewing of your mind which means you got to think differently don't think like the world you think like God well how do you think like God by praying without ceasing so that you may prove what the will of God is notice by doing these things by presenting your body a living and holy sacrifice by renewing your mind you are proving what God will is you are a living proof of what God is desiring of people and it says that which is good and acceptable and perfect they're not three different purposes of God there is one purpose of God that purpose of God is good it is acceptable and it is perfect or complete God's will is all of those things it's not well I can do this part which is acceptable or good no no all of God's will is all of those things I want to give you a little parable it's not as good as Jesus is and Jesus kind of has a parable but I'm not that vain but I think it kind of drives the point home the point that I want to make and it's this there's a person that a another person has great love and respect for he goes to that person and says what can I do for you and that person goes take out the trash because you don't understand I'm brilliant I'm a doctor lawyer and an astrophysicist I have 13 PhDs and the first thing goes I know take out the trash but I am the CEO of multiple corporations where thousands of people are employed by me and do what I say don't you understand my power I know what you've done take out the trash but I'm famous I am beloved by multiple millions of people on all the continents and I'm following I'm an influencer and I have this great power of following certainly there's more than I can do for you and he replies I know all of these things take out the trash now that person to do one of three things you can go I'm not going to do it and leave or you can say I think it's a waste of my time and efforts but I'll take out the trash and you can be disgruntled at it you can say oh that's.
What you want me to do I'd be happy to do it and you take out the trash the principal here is two things and God tells you what his will is and we should do it but it's not high and mighty it's a matter of just rejoicing take out the trash but I could do so much more I know take out the trash do what I've asked you to do there's a second principle involved as well and that is when you are faithful in a little thing then God will have you rule over many things maybe God is saying here are some various obvious things that you can do you can present your bodies as the living and holy sacrifice you can understand that you are my temple that I dwell in you and I don't want you connected to the world that I want you to rejoice in everything I want you to pray without ceasing and I want you to give thanks and everything and if you can do those little things then maybe I will trust you with more things so maybe if you are are more intelligent than all the rest of the world you do what God has told you to do that maybe he will let you do other things but if he can't trust you in the little things why would he trust you in the big things and so I said there are three possibilities you could say I'm not going to do it because you just don't understand who I am that's the world it's about me and who I am and you should be grateful that I'm willing to do anything for you but I'm not going to take out the trash that's beneath me or you can mutter and complain and you can obey anyway or you can do what the psalmist did and in psalms 40 verse 8 is this I delight to do your will oh my God your law is within my heart God if you say take out the trash yes sir is there more trash you want me to take out I'll take that out too do you need to be me here in another hour to take out more trash I'll do that whatever it is you want me to do God not only am I going to do it I'm going to be happy in it and I'm going to rejoice in it because you told me to rejoice always so I'm only taking out the trash even though it's beneath me wonderful because God you've entrusted me with taking out the trash praise God because there's a whole lot of people he never asked to take out the trash do you trust in me to take out the trash he trusted us to present our bodies as holy he trusted us to say rejoice always he's trusted us to say pray without ceasing he's trusted us to say in everything give thanks and when we are faithful and a few things you will have us to rule over many things maybe just maybe in the little things we can show that we are like our father faithful and everything he's called us to do because he has been faithful in everything that he's called us to do and he's never left us nor forsaken us and as always in there to forgive us even when we sin knowingly he never leaves us or forsakes us now only that he's there saying my blood covered that the will of God is not mysterious he tells us what it is he wants we can do it entrust him all we could be like the one that he talked about in a parable who said okay I'll do it God and they didn't do it well we can be like the son who says now I'm not going to do it taking better of it you did the will of the father so my question to you now that we know what the will of God is are you going to do it
And all God's people sayIf frequently asked question is what is the will of God? In pursuit of that question people will read books, ask people who they think are wise or spiritual, how to discern what God's will is. Today we're going to take a look at the Bible, God's Word, and see what God says His will is.

What you want me to do I'd be happy to do it and you take out the trash the principal here is two things and God tells you what his will is and we should do it but it's not high and mighty it's a matter of just rejoicing take out the trash but I could do so much more I know take out the trash do what I've asked you to do there's a second principle involved as well and that is when you are faithful in a little thing then God will have you rule over many things maybe God is saying here are some various obvious things that you can do you can present your bodies as the living and holy sacrifice you can understand that you are my temple that I dwell in you and I don't want you connected to the world that I want you to rejoice in everything I want you to pray without ceasing and I want you to give thanks and everything and if you can do those little things then maybe I will trust you with more things so maybe if you are are more intelligent than all the rest of the world you do what God has told you to do that maybe he will let you do other things but if he can't trust you in the little things why would he trust you in the big things and so I said there are three possibilities you could say I'm not going to do it because you just don't understand who I am that's the world it's about me and who I am and you should be grateful that I'm willing to do anything for you but I'm not going to take out the trash that's beneath me or you can mutter and complain and you can obey anyway or you can do what the psalmist did and in psalms 40 verse 8 is this I delight to do your will oh my God your law is within my heart God if you say take out the trash yes sir is there more trash you want me to take out I'll take that out too do you need to be me here in another hour to take out more trash I'll do that whatever it is you want me to do God not only am I going to do it I'm going to be happy in it and I'm going to rejoice in it because you told me to rejoice always so I'm only taking out the trash even though it's beneath me wonderful because God you've entrusted me with taking out the trash praise God because there's a whole lot of people he never asked to take out the trash do you trust in me to take out the trash he trusted us to present our bodies as holy he trusted us to say rejoice always he's trusted us to say pray without ceasing he's trusted us to say in everything give thanks and when we are faithful and a few things you will have us to rule over many things maybe just maybe in the little things we can show that we are like our father faithful and everything he's called us to do because he has been faithful in everything that he's called us to do and he's never left us nor forsaken us and as always in there to forgive us even when we sin knowingly he never leaves us or forsakes us now only that he's there saying my blood covered that the will of God is not mysterious he tells us what it is he wants we can do it entrust him all we could be like the one that he talked about in a parable who said okay I'll do it God and they didn't do it well we can be like the son who says now I'm not going to do it taking better of it you did the will of the father so my question to you now that we know what the will of God is are you going to do it
And all God's people say
